R&P Post 14: My Target Audience

As we are creating an album for a debut artist, we decided that we should target a wide audience demographic so as to garner as much interest from the public in order to gain popularity and sell more records. However, we have also chosen our core audiences that we would target specifically. These audiences would be the people who grow up alongside our artist and buy the albums due to personally identifying with the artist image (audience theory).

Core/primary audience - female teens/young adults

An example of our target audience

Our primary audience is female teenagers and young adults. Teenage girls are constantly trying to understand themselves in a society that tells them how they should behave and how they should appear. An artist around their own age singing about positivity and telling young women to take control would attract the interests of many in this category.

Selena Gomez with her fans

Our primary target audience will be similar to Selena Gomez's primary audience demographic. As you can see in the photo above, her fans mostly consist of female teenagers or young adults. We hope to use similar strategies that she uses in order to best appeal to our primary target audience.

Wider audience - all women

  • Secondary audience - young girls
  • Tertiary audience - mothers, older women

Our wider audience are the wider female audience. Younger girls often look up to older teenagers or young adults as role models. They would hopefully find our artist inspirational and aim to be like her when they grow up. As a result of this, mothers of young girls would also consume our music. They would buy the albums or singles for their children or treat them to tickets to the concert to see the artist live. Because children do not have any money of their own, their parents would purchase the album. Parents would be likely to judge the type of music that they consume so that they do not get influenced by bad behaviour. Our music would positively affect younger girls so this would make mothers more likely to buy the album for their daughters.

Celebrities such as Kylie Jenner have a
huge cult following including young girls

approve of One Direction and has bought
her daughter merchandise including the
poster and T-shirt

However, it is important that we do not alienate the male counterparts. Fans of pop music in general would consume GiGi's music and enjoy the message that she sends. These people would consume her music, probably through streaming, but may not be an avid fan of her and therefore be less likely to invest in her merchandise or albums.
